Canvas is Shanghai Jiao Tong University's official learning management system. It features multiple sections that aggregate all course information and announcements. Both the university and the Joint Institute use the Undergraduate section to publish official notices, making it the primary channel for students to receive official communications.

  1. Dashboard: The Dashboard is your personal "memo board" prepared by the school. It displays all activity notifications for the current semester, including course registration timelines, assignments, coursework, and more. In short, whenever an instructor or the Academic Affairs Office publishes a notice, it will appear on your Dashboard with the time and details. Make it a habit to check the Dashboard daily so you don't miss anything important!

  2. Groups: Group work is an indispensable part of university life. In this section, you can see all your group assignments across different courses for the semester, making it easy to quickly find out which group you're in for a given course and who your teammates are.

  3. Calendar: The Calendar is another great feature. It displays a traditional calendar view, but with a twist — upcoming deadlines are marked directly on the corresponding dates. For example, if you have a coding assignment due on May 20th, you'll see a label for it right on the May 20th cell, serving as a constant reminder to watch your time. Getting into the habit of checking the Calendar daily to ensure you haven't missed any deadlines is a great practice!

  4. Inbox: The Inbox is where professors and teaching assistants send you messages about important announcements. However, with the prevalence of other communication channels like email, Feishu, and WeChat, the Inbox is rarely used these days.

Feishu (飞书) ​

Feishu (飞书) is the Joint Institute's official communication platform and one of the tools you'll use most frequently after enrolling. When you first arrive, you will automatically receive your own Feishu account. From then on, almost every course will have its own Feishu group for course announcements, homework discussions, and academic exchanges. Unlike WeChat or QQ, Feishu is an organization-based communication tool — once you've joined the institute's Feishu workspace, you can search for any faculty member or student by name and start a conversation immediately, without the cumbersome "add friend and wait for approval" process. In other words, communicating with teachers and classmates on Feishu is as easy as calling out to someone in the same office.

Feishu is also incredibly powerful — creating groups for communication is just one small part of what it can do. It integrates features such as shared documents, mind maps, online meetings, a calendar, an address book, and many more capabilities.

Some people describe Feishu as a combination of WPS + WeChat + Zoom + Trello, covering most of the features you might need for studying and collaboration. As you use it, you'll gradually discover more of its benefits — like launching polls directly in a chat to gather opinions, or having meeting notes automatically generated.

Meeting Room Guide ​

Meeting rooms are essential spaces for study and discussion. Whether you need to work on a group project, discuss your Engineering Design and Practice (工导 / Engineering Project) project, participate in a competition like UPC, or simply find a place to study on your own, meeting rooms are a great option. There are generally two types of meeting rooms available: Library Meeting Rooms and Longbin Building (龙宾楼) Meeting Rooms. Here's a more detailed introduction:

  1. Library Meeting Rooms (Study Rooms)
  • Location: Main Library (主图), Bao Yugang Library (包图) (for open floors, check My SJTU (交我办))
  • Booking: Search for "交图空间预约" (Library Space Reservation) in My SJTU (交我办)
  • Notes: Reservations typically require at least three people. You must scan your Siyuan Code (思源码) when entering the room, or it will be considered a violation.
  1. Longbin Building (龙宾楼) Meeting Rooms
  • Location: Longbin Building (龙宾楼) (available on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors)
  • Booking: Reserve at https://booking.gc.sjtu.edu.cn/web/resource/ROOM/blocks
  • Notes: Reservations typically require at least three people. You must scan your Siyuan Code (思源码) when entering the room, or it will be considered a violation. After three violations, your room booking privileges will be locked for one year. However, you can go to LBL 450 to speak with an IT staff member to have it unlocked. Also, you may find that some participants cannot be found when searching for their names. This happens because those students haven't logged into the booking website yet — once they log in, their information will be recorded and they can be found normally.

Writing Center Guide ​

During the Fall English Writing Course, your professor or TA will guide you through your first use of the Writing Center, where you can schedule time with a Writing Consultant (typically an upperclassman) to help polish your essays. After logging into the official website https://bluetiger.sjtu.edu.cn, you can view the details of the consultants on duty for each time slot and choose a convenient time to book. Sometimes you may need to communicate via Feishu (飞书) — in that case, you can send the document you need reviewed to the consultant in advance for an efficient session.

SRC (Student Rights Center) Guide ​

SRC (Student Rights Center) is a student feedback platform built on Piazza. As an extension of the Dean's Meeting, it provides a channel for students to submit proposals on a daily basis. It can also serve as a discussion forum for sharing thoughts, venting, and browsing past issues and their resolutions — ranging from minor facility repairs to the institute's curriculum design.

Registration Methods:

  • Method 1: Open https://piazza.com/sjtu.org/other/src and select "Join as Student"
  • Method 2: On the Piazza "Join Classes" page, set "Selected Term" to "Other", search for "SRC", select "Student Rights Center", and click "Join as Student". When submitting a proposal, simply select a category, briefly describe the issue (you can refer to past proposals for reference), and within three to five minutes, the institute will receive your request. The internal committee will promptly forward feasible proposals to the relevant departments and update the progress on Piazza. A monthly progress push will also be added starting this semester, so stay tuned!

i.sjtu (教学信息服务网站) ​

First, it's important to understand the relationship between the Joint Institute and the main campus. The institute has a high degree of autonomy and operates its own Academic Affairs Office (UEO). However, for student affairs such as course registration and grade reporting, the institute's Academic Affairs Office acts as an intermediary, processing and forwarding your course selection, grades, and other student information to the university's Academic Affairs Office. Therefore, if you want to view your student information — such as your GPA or grade points — you need to log in to the main campus's i.sjtu system.

Within i.sjtu, I consider two modules to be particularly important and commonly used: Course Selection (选课) and Information Inquiry (信息查询).

In the Course Selection section, you can view your personal class schedule (course enrollment and time arrangements for the semester) and select courses based on recommended schedules. In the Information Inquiry section, you can check all details about your academic progress, such as grades, degree program plans, exam information (exam times and room assignments), and other important data.

You'll find yourself using i.sjtu frequently throughout your studies, so hopefully you'll get the hang of it quickly!

My SJTU (交我办) ​

My SJTU (交我办) is Shanghai Jiao Tong University's official service app — an all-in-one platform that integrates all the benefits and features the university offers. Through this app, you can access every service and resource the school provides.

For example, you can use My SJTU (交我办) to book sports venues; reserve the campus shuttle bus for a 30-minute express commute from Minhang to Xuhui campus (straight to downtown); reserve library seats for focused study; or access your Siyuan Code (思源码) (similar to a digital campus card) for on-campus payments, building access, and more. There are countless features I can't list them all here. Whenever you need to accomplish something, try typing what you want to do into the search bar — more often than not, you'll find exactly what you're looking for!

Key Features of My SJTU (交我办): ​

  • Library Seat Reservation: Search for "图书馆" (Library) -> "交图座位预约" (Library Seat Reservation). On the reservation page, choose the library you want to visit — options include the Main Library (主图), Bao Yugang Library (包图), the Tsung-Dao Lee Library (李政道图书馆), and the Social Science Reading Room (社科阅览室) at Xuhui Campus. Select your seat and time slot, and you're all set for a productive study session! (Note: You must arrive and check in within 30 minutes of your reservation start time. Three late or missed check-ins will result in a temporary freeze of your reservation privileges for several days.)
  • Paying Electricity Bills: Search for "宿舍电费" (Dormitory Electricity) to conveniently pay your electricity bill. On the page, you can see how much electricity your dorm still has left. When you need to top up, select your dormitory and click "立即交付" (Pay Now) to recharge online!
  • Shuiyuan Community (水源社区): Shuiyuan Community is SJTU's own campus forum. Search for "水源社区" (Shuiyuan Community) to enter the forum. Here, you can find all kinds of posts — gain valuable study tips from the forum's "stars," chat about life and find like-minded friends in the casual discussion sections, or share your views on current hot topics and explore them with talented students from various majors. Shuiyuan is full of useful information and lively intellectual exchange — it's the perfect forum for SJTU students. Dive in and explore!
  • Email: Your SJTU email is also accessible directly through My SJTU (交我办). Search for "邮箱" (Email) to find the button that takes you to the email interface. Email will become an important communication medium in your academic life — it's more official and formal, and many important messages will be delivered to you this way. So it's a good habit to open My SJTU (交我办) and check your email every day!
  • Second Classroom (劳动学时 / Work Credits): Accumulating sufficient work-study credits is an important graduation requirement. But how do you earn them? It's simple — search for "第二课堂" (Second Classroom). Here, you'll find not only volunteer opportunities from the Joint Institute, but also volunteer activities posted by all colleges and departments across the university. You can also check what activities you're currently participating in and how many work credits you've earned. (Note: Besides participating in activities through the Second Classroom, you can also earn work credits by taking part in institute-level student activities and volunteer work. Announcements for these activities are published in official WeChat groups.)
  • Shuttle Bus Reservation: Search for "学生预约校车" (Student Shuttle Reservation) to book the campus shuttle. The shuttle is a very convenient service provided by the university — it takes just 30 minutes to get from "Minhang Wilderness (闵大荒)" to the city center.
  • Software Licensing Center: Search for "软件授权中心" (Software Licensing Center). The university has purchased licenses for many paid software tools for students. Simply go to the Software Licensing Center, find the software you need — such as PyCharm or Office — and follow the instructions to install and configure them. You can start using these powerful tools for free!
  • Classroom Information: Search for "教学楼信息" (Teaching Building Info) to quickly check the availability of all classrooms across campus. For example, if you want to find an empty classroom to study in, just look up which rooms have no classes scheduled during your desired time slot, and you can head there to study without interruption!
  • Venue Reservation: Search for "场馆预约" (Venue Reservation). SJTU has many public facilities available for use, including sports venues like the air dome体育馆, outdoor football fields, and outdoor tennis courts, as well as entertainment spaces like the Zijing Street (子衿街) board game room and billiard room. You can find them all in the "场馆预约" section and reserve a time slot that works for you. But competition is fierce — make sure to book early!
  • Requesting Certificate of Enrollment: Go to "学在交大" (Study at SJTU) -> "证明" (Certificates) -> "在读证明" (Certificate of Enrollment) to request a certificate verifying your status as an enrolled student at SJTU. This may be needed for visa applications, document submissions, etc. It can be sent to your email, but note that it's only valid for two weeks.
  • Visitor Campus Access Registration: Friends and family need to register before entering the campus. On My SJTU (交我办), you need to provide their name, identity, purpose of visit, and (if arriving by car) their license plate number. Upon arrival, they can enter using their ID card or Suishen Code (随申码, available via Alipay). License plates are generally not checked; the main verification is on personal identification. This feature is available under "校园管理" (Campus Management) -> "学生亲友进校备案" (Student Visitor Registration).

Network Information Center (网络信息中心) ​

The Network Information Center (网络信息中心) website is a hub for SJTU's network-related tools and services, including:

  • SJTU Cloud Drive (交大云盘): SJTU's own cloud storage tool. Log in with your jAccount to upload and share large files.
  • SJTU VPN (交大 VPN): Allows you to access SJTU's campus network from anywhere in the world. In the future, whenever you need to use school or lab servers, you'll likely need to connect through the SJTU VPN to access the campus network first. It can also help you access external resources like academic papers and videos.
  • Campus Network Connection (校园网链接): Helps you make the most of the campus Wi-Fi, so you can say goodbye to using mobile data on campus!

There are many more network-related tools available, but the three above are the most commonly used. Knowing how to make good use of these network tools will be very important for navigating the digital landscape of university life. So go ahead and explore!
